From Evaluation to Interventions: Essential Skills for Firefighters
Upgrade your Emergency First Responder certification with our EFR Skills Upgrade Program. This advanced CPR/AED program includes theory and practical training that allows recruits to practice many real-world scenarios in order to improve their life-saving and patient assessment skills.
PROGRAM DETAILS
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Participants will learn and demonstrate all knowledge and skills needed to provide appropriate patient assessments, interventions, and on-going care, including the transportation of a patient to a healthcare facility.
Course content may vary depending on jurisdictional requirements and, in addition, follows the National Occupational Competency Profiles (NOCP) as defined by the Paramedic Association of Canada.
Participants will be engaged in dynamic training techniques including video, media presentations, skills demonstrations, practice sessions, discussions and scenarios based on real-life situations.
This program does not require approval under the Ontario Career Colleges Act 2005
IN ORDER TO GET CERTIFIED
- Successfully demonstrate the required skills
- Minimum 75% mark for written, closed book knowledge evaluation
- Successfully complete two evaluated scenarios (one medical and one trauma)
- Attend and participate in 100% of the course
- Must meet additional legislative requirements, if applicable
Note: Instructors/Evaluators may conduct a one-to-one verbal or written evaluation if the student has a demonstrated learning disability completing written evaluations.
For professionals in emergency medical care who may be responsible for initial assessment, intervention, & transport of patients.
SKILLS YOU WILL LEARN
Aided by a live demonstration from one of our Red-Cross Certified Instructors, students will learn all the skills necessary to successfully complete the Emergency First Responder Upgrade Program.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE
Certification
3-year certification in Emergency First Responder (digital certificate issued upon successful completion).
Program Hours
This program is a 40-hour full-time and in-person training. The program hours are from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm on weekends.
Materials
Participants will require the Canadian Red Cross Emergency Care for Professional Responders Reference Text.
Discipline
Every participant must report to OFA on time, wearing a clean uniform, and ready to work alongside fellow recruits.
